VE Day – and it’s 1p a pint
FORMER soldiers and their sweethearts should get in the mood for a night of nostalgic fun as a pub gets set to throw a VE Day bash to remember.
It may be a long way to Tipperary, but it's not that far to Billericay, where managers of the Railway pub and hotel will host the event to mark the date which saw the end of the Second World War in Europe.
As part of the fun, landlord Alan King and his wife Louise have a treat for anysoldiers or servicemen and women who served during the war and turn up at the High Street pub tomorrow night.
These special punters will be served their first pint at 1945 prices - equivalent of 1p today.
DJ Dan the Magic Man will also be belting out non-stop wartime hits from forces sweetheart Vera Lynn as well as big band tunes from Glen Miller, including his immortal piece, In the Mood.
Alan said: "We want this to be a real nostalgic night and a party to remember.
"It's important to do something special to celebrate VE Day.
"Younger people are also welcome to come along and discover what pop music of 60 years ago was like."
VE Day is celebrated every year on May 8 to mark the date in 1945 when the allied troops formally accepted Germany's unconditional surrender.
