Gulls’ Bourne in the World Cup
CANVEY Island soccer star Chris Bourne is on top of the world today.
For the full-back cum midfielder has been named in the Guyana squad for their World Cup two-legged qualifying game with Suriname next month.
Bourne, a member of the Gulls' squad which won the Ryman One North play-off final against Redbridge last weekend, played in two friendly matches for Guyana during the latter part of the current season.
He impressed, particularly with his crossing abilities, and is now preparing to fly out to New York on June 1 to play for Guyana in a tournament against teams from the Major League Soccer set-up, which David Beckham's LA Galaxy team compete in.
After this Bourne and his team-mates fly to Trinidad and Tobago two weeks later to play the first leg against Suriname on June 22nd.
The second leg is in Guyana on June 28.
Bourne said: "I am so chuffed and proud that I have been picked to represent my dad's country and will aim to do everyone in my family and Guyana proud."
Before flying out Bourne has one more important footballing date back in England on Sunday when the FC Gulls team he manages play in the Sceptre League's Section H Andy Ward Cup final.
His line-up, having already won the Division Seven title, take on FC Sparta in the final, which has an 11am kick-off at Cupids Country Club, Great Wakering.
It is one of four Sceptre finals being held on the day.

The whole of the action from Saturday's triumph over Redbridge will be shown on the big screen in the Park Lane clubhouse from 8pm tonight.
