Transport in Essex praised

l ESSEX County Council has been shortlisted for three prestigious national transport awards.

The county has been nominated for the local authority of the year award, the road safety traffic management and enforcement award and the contribution to sustainable transport and technology award.

Councillor Norman Hume, responsible for highways and transportation, said: "I am delighted."

Mr Hume said a three year maintenance initiative has seen a backlog of repairs carried out across Essex with nearly a quarter of the entire 4,720 mile network renewed. In addition £4.7 million has been saved through the more efficient management of contracts for maintenance.
